ETRO - IRIS research topic

Overview Projects Publications
Topic Overview

The research activity focuses on Wireless Sensors and Actuator Networks (WSANs) protocols and applications. The group has experience with the design and deployment of adaptive multi-channel MAC protocols and energy-efficient routing. The recent research activity of the group has focused on the use of Internet Protocol (IP) and Web technologies for embedded devices. These technologies simplify the integration between the emerging Internet of Things and the traditional Internet/Web. The group has expertise in the following main topics:

  • Protocols and algorithms. The group has expertise on IP and Web based technologies for WSANs. In particular, the group works with IPv6 over Low power Wireless Personal Area Networks (6LoWPAN), IPv6 Routing Protocol for Low-power and Lossy networks (RPL) and Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP). The group has also expertise on the design and development of cross-layer algorithms and strategies.
  • Middleware and Back-end. The group has expertise in the development of Java based middleware and back-end systems for WSANs. The group has developed a Java based platform which allows web applications to seamlessly explore, access and visualize WSAN resources.
  • Testbed development. The group develops real world testbeds consisting of various IP/Web sensor motes (temperature, humidity, light, noise, irradiation, vibration) and actuators for control (lighting, solar energy systems, wind energy systems).
  • Standardization. The group follows the Internet of Things standardization activity. In particular, the group actively follows the activity of the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) Constrained RESTful environments (CoRE) Working Group which has designed the Constrained Application Protocol (CoAP).
  • Application development. The research group has expertise on the development of Internet of Things applications for environmental monitoring and control and building automation.
  • Smartphone sensing. Modern smartphones are equipped with several sensors and therefore can be considered as sensor motes. The group investigates on the integration of the Internet of Things with smartphone based networks for the development of crowd based sensing applications.
