Problem Statement: Big Data and Cloud framework optimization
The current PhD explores the innovative, distributed, open-source Big Data frameworks and its main goal is to contribute to both research and open-source communities. Over the last years, the most successful software and web companies have deployed such frameworks on a large scale in their datacenters. Given this, the purpose of the present PhD, is to increase the efficiency and performance of the industrial back-end infrastructures which will result in reduced operating costs related to hardware resources and energy consumption. More specifically, this research aims at proposing specific performance prediction solutions for both batch and streaming applications of frameworks like Apache Spark with the use of Machine Learning algorithms, in order to optimally allocate only those resources which are necessary to meet the requirements. The derived models are meant to be used by an auto-tune framework, which will apply a variety of real-time optimizations.
