Abstract: An ever-increasing fraction of the visual content contributing to medical diagnosis has a volumetric character. A plethora of volumetric imaging devices is available, such as Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Computer-assisted Tomography (CT), Ultrasound (US), Single Photon Emission Computed Tomography (SPECT) and Positron Emission Tomography (PET). Several diagnostic and emergency scenarios exist that rely on the exploitation in mobile stations of on-line available volumetric data or on data generated by mobile imaging systems. Consequently, there is an increasing demand for compact data representations used for storage and transmission purposes, which simultaneously support the functionalities needed to ensure fast interactivity over wireless channels.
