Abstract: Currently, the Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) committee (ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG1) is working on the standardization of a three-dimensional extension for the JPEG2000 standard (Part 1 and Part 2) to add support for volumetric data sets with no time component. The Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is working as a member of this standardization committee on the specification of the "JPEG2000 Part 10: Extensions for three-dimensional data" (JP3D) standard. This paper gives an overview of the current status of JP3D and of the features it will support, like region-of-interest coding, quality scalability and resolution scalability, while exploiting the entropy in all three dimensions to improve the rate-distortion and coding performance. The paper also describes some of the algorithms needed to provide this rich set of features.
